The UTEP tennis team advanced three players and two doubles tandems into championship matches during Day 2 of the Miner Fall Invite on Saturday at the New Mexico State Tennis Center. UTEP’s cumulative record at the event now stands a stout 12-5 in singles play and 8-2 in doubles action. “It was another great day,” UTEP head coach Jamie Campbell said. “We surpassed our expectations. Colt McCoy finished 28/35 passing for 286 yards and three touchdowns, Jordan Shipley had 122 yards receiving and a touchdown on ten catches and Vondrell McGee collected 104 yards on the ground with a TD as the #2 Texas Longhorns dismantled the UTEP Miners 64-7 on Saturday. Texas jumped to a quick 7-0 lead when Tre’ Newton scored on a 3-yard run but after the Longhorns got the ball back off a turnover McCoy was picked off by Melvin Stephenson who went back 49 yards for a touchdown and the game was tied at 7-7. Texas wasted little time in snapping that tie though as D.J. Monroe took the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards for a touchdown and after the extra point was missed the score was 13-7. Hunter Lawrence added a 20-yard field goal to extend the Longhorns lead to 16-7 and then McCoy capped the scoring in the first quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Dan Buckner to push the score to 23-7.
