Can using a mobile phone cause allergic skin disorders?
The Nickel Institute states that nickel is an essential material for the operation of mobile phones, used for both functional purposes and aesthetic appearance. However, when used on external surfaces nickel may pose a hazard to individuals with an existing skin allergy. The level of risk will depend on the pattern of use, the environment in which the phone is used and the sensitivity of the individual to nickel dermatitis. Manufacturers of mobile phones recognise that this is an issue of importance and many phone models are available that do not use nickel on surfaces. The GSMA understands that some manufacturers plan to phase out use of nickel on surfaces across their product range. Using a case or handsfree kit will minimise contact to surfaces that may contain nickel.
