Can u explain the manifest destiny?
Look — when America achieved its independence from Britain, it was hemmed in along the eastern shores of the Mississippi River. When Thomas Jefferson effected the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 it doubled the size of the USA overnight, and opened up vast stretches of land west of the Mississippi. But settling this new territory was slow, and during this period, Americans came into contact with the Plains Indians who hampered their progress. The idea of Manifest Destiny began to take hold in the 1820s. The idea was that it was America’s destiny to expand across the entire continent and make the land between the Atlantic and the Pacific their own. This idea picked up speed in the 1830s when the Texans declared independence from Mexico, and reached a fever pitch in the 1840s and 1850s.
