Can tomato, capsicum, squash and zucchini be grown together?
Your design idea sounds lovely. However, the arrangement is not the best as agricultural practice goes. These plants might grow together very well the first year; not so well after that, if planted in the same spots. We get into crop rotation, here. Tomatoes (Lypersicon) and hot peppers (Capsicum) are both members of the Nightshade Family (Solanaceae). Zucchini is a squash and therefore, like any squash, is a member of the Cucurbita Family (Curcubitaceae). So are cucumbers. The rule of thumb is: Don’t plant members of the same family in the same spot, repeatedly. It is best to plan a three-year rotation. Rotation cuts down on the chance of soil diseases developing. For a very beneficial third crop, I suggest beans or peas. Both are Legumes, members of the Pea Family (Leguminosae). Study the habits of various legumes – many need something to climb on. Legumes are helpful in two ways: They add nitrogen to the soil, and although they must be rotated, they can be rotated with any other fam
