Can Todays Technology Clean Up Coal Emmissions From Power Plants?
Western Europe’s biggest carbon emitter, the Drax coal-fired power plant in Yorkshire, England, is cleaning up its act with technology available at the minute. This is a message to all the big coal fired plants in the world – particularly in China and America. Rather than banking on untried carbon capture, Dorothy Thompson, Drax Power’s chief executive said: “We think its really important that we take practical, immediate steps rather than following the debate of the future,” said in an interview. She was speaking just before Drax signed a recent 100-million pound deal with Germany’s Siemens, to fit turbines that should cut the plant’s emissions by five per cent. The method of carbon capture and storage is seen as a quick fix for the amount of greenhouse gases power stations create. Unfortunately The waste is stuffed into storage sites under the seabed.
