Can Tiger get a sponsors exemption to play an LPGA event?
Don’t think so.–John Boyle, Cypress, Calif. Yours is a complaint we’re sure to hear from more PGA Tour players if Wie and other women continue to get exemptions. The sponsors pay the bills and if inviting a certain player sells tickets, whether it’s Wie, Annika Sorenstam or Mark Rypien (the Kemper Open gave him an exemption one year), it’s in their best interests to do so. It’s hard to argue the buzz that Annika and Michelle generated for their appearances. However, it’s also hard to argue that a 14-year-old female amateur is more worthy of an exemption than a card-carrying PGA Tour member. Greg Norman recently spoke out against women playing the men’s tour and I think his gripe is the same as yours, Boyle Toy. Women would be welcome on the PGA Tour if they qualified for tournaments just like everyone else. We’re going to hear more on this topic, guaranteed.
