Any clumping type litter is a bad type for ferrets. While you may not notice any problems if you start them out on it, they’re liable to end up with bits of litter stuck on their bums (they tend to rub them on the floor and in the litter after going). Also, the dust from clumping litter enters their sensitive nasal passages and lungs, and can clump up there, causing respiratory problems down the line. You might think that’s how often they should sneeze, or that they normally wheeze that loudly, but it isn’t healthy for them. It’s better to use wood pellets. Avoid pine (the oils in pine are an irritant to ferrets), but otherwise, feel free to just buy wood stove pellets at a local hardware store. That’s going to be the cheapest option. The pet store should sell pellets, possibly in the bird section, sometimes in the cat section. Yesterday’s News is one specific brand of pellets that I’m familiar with, that most pet stores in my region carry.
