Can thumbsucking and pacifiers be harmful for my childs teeth?
Thumb and pacifier sucking habits that go on for a long period of time can create crowded, crooked teeth or bite problems. If they are still sucking their thumbs or fingers when the permanent teeth arrive, steps need to be taken to help them stop. Most children stop these habits on their own, however many of our patients have had success using a product called MAVALA Stop that is painted onto the patient’s fingers or thumb. If the patient isn’t having success with these options, a mouth appliance may be recommended. We have found positive reinforcement to be a very effective tool in the cessation of these habits. Since most children suck their thumb during periods of insecurity, we recommend trying to identify those triggers and praise your child when they refrain from thumbsucking.
