The last big volcanic eruption of this type occurred in Washington State in c1980 – it put so much dust and smoke into the upper atmosphere that it made the next couple of summers rather dull here in UK. I’m expecting a similar problem, at least for this summer of 2010 anyway. These eruptions are quite a lot more common than most of us think.
