Can there be true progress when ancient knowledge or wisdom is forgotten?
I believe that yes, there can be true progress when ancient beliefs and wisdom are forgotten. This is because whether you are dealing with ancient wisdom or a new situation, you still have to use your own inner guidance, that still small voice from spirit, to discern truth and act from Love and with wisdom. If you are truly connected to your spirit’s guidance, you will always find the truth and right action, no matter what information is, or is not, available to your conscious mind. IMHO.
Esoteric religion was widely popular in the ancient world:- the Eleusinian Mysteries were attractive to many people simply because they were mysteries. It is likely that the Apocalypse was intended to be hard to understand, and perhaps even impossible in places; that would have increased its attractiveness to seekers after arcane knowledge. But the whole notion that you make knowledge more precious by rendering it inaccessible is huckster bull$h**. The truth can stand in the open, because it is resistant to investigation and criticism. Mystical ‘wisdom traditions’ belong on Fox news – the real thing doesn’t need such mumbo-jumbo. There will always be a market for snake-oil;- people who really don’t like thinking would rather be spoon fed nonsense than given honest instruction (which always involves some kind of mental commitment). The only thing wrong with snake oil is that it doesn’t work.
