Can The Twins Overcome Their Battered Womans Syndrome?
The local angle: Despite injuries and a pronounced lack of momentum, there has never been a better Twins team that could win the World Series. Joe Mauer will be able to play, and his wingmen in offense, particularly Delmon Young and Denard Span, have been able to ride the merry-go-round with more consistency than any other playoff team with the “TC” logo in years past. Moreover, they have the Yankees, their (and every other MLB team’s, for that matter) prime nemesis, as their American League Division Series opponent. The Yanks beat the Twinkies in ALDS’s in 2003, 2004 and 2009, so the biggest opponent may not be the Yankees but the recurring thoughts of how the Yankees bashed their brains in so often, post- and regular season. However, this presents an opportunity. Like any movie protagonist, the team can’t just reach its goal – it has to defeat the enemy that prevented them from reaching that goal so often.
