Washing large particles of contaminant off the outside surface of the cartridge or Back-flushing will extend the cartridge life, but eventually the cartridge will be blocked completely and will have to be thrown away. Contaminants trapped in the depth of the cartridge is difficult to remove by back-flushing. Back-flushing more than once is usually not effective. Once the full depth of the cartridge is blocked, the cartridge will have to be thrown away and replaced with a clean one.
