The R4 cannot be used in the DSI because the system examines and reads all of the contents of the cartridge. But for games that are not American, there is a DS passkey that allows you to play foreign games on American DSI’s. Not only that, it can read and play any DS games possibly including the R4. So hopefully this DS passkey is compatible with the R4. Try searching the DS paskey on Google or Youtube to see if there’s more information on them. Hope this helps!
