Can the Pip be built with a Sherline lathe and mill or an Imported Mini-Lathe or Mini-Mill?
• With a little ingenuity, the engine could be built on some of the more popular bench-top equipment such as the Sherline lathe and mill and the imported mini-lathes and mini-mills. You will need the a low profile, adjustable angle plate, a rotary table with dividing plates as well as a fixed 90-degree angle plate for the set-ups and indexing. • The largest diameter part to be turned is the back plate at 2-1/2″. • The crankcase comes in a close second at 2-3/8″ diameter. For this part, boring up to about 2-3/4″ deep is required. This will make for some slow going and working in stages on the smaller equipment, but should not be a problem. • The tops of the cylinder jugs are radiused, turning the top shape and the fins in the lathe (as described in the instructions provided and shown on the website construction photos). This work can be done on smaller equipment utilizing the fixed angle plate, the rotary table, and a tapered ball end mill (available from MSCdirect). The rotary table is
