Can the new Roddick-McEnroe coaching arrangement bear fruit?
Andy Roddick’s promising start this season has been undermined by a gimpy shoulder and less-than-ideal preparation heading into New York. U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe has stepped in to help after Roddick parted ways with his coach and brother, John. McEnroe says Roddick “worked his butt off” last week when they trained together at the National Tennis Center. “I think he felt physically good for the first time,” McEnroe added. Roddick looked sharp in dispatching Fabrice Santoro in his first match but faces a big test today in second-round opponent Ernests Gulbis. The flashy Latvian, who turns 20 Saturday, reached the French Open quarterfinals. If Roddick survives Gulbis, Fernando Gonzalez, the Beijing Games silver medalist, could lurk two rounds later.
