Can the HP48 be used as a DTMF phone dialer?
To make phone dialing tones, you need to produce two simultaneous tones. The tones used to dial phones are known as DTMF (dual tone multi frequency) tones, which consist of two tones at the same time. The speaker in the HP48 is not capable of supporting the DTMF tones because it can only make a single tone at a time. The best the HP48 can do is switch very quickly between one frequency and another. Some attempts have been made in machine language to support DTMF, however they have been unsuccessful. Therefore, you cannot use the HP48 as a phone dialer.
