Can the general public obtain copies of military records?
Only limited information from Official Military Personnel Files is releasable to the general public without the consent of the veteran or the veteran’s next-of-kin. The type of information that can be released strikes a balance between the public’s right to know and the veteran’s right to privacy. See the Research page on the National Archives and Records Administration’s web site for more details.
