This was a team that so many had counted out before the 2009 MLB playoffs began. Maybe it was the fact that they exited during the first round of the playoffs in 2008. Maybe it was the fact that Manny Ramirez aside, there are no big names on the team like you’ll find in Philadelphia with Ryan Howard and company or in St. Louis with Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter, and others. Whatever it was, the Los Angeles Dodgers still finished the year with the best record in the National League, yet they were still seen as the last National League team that most expected would have a shot to make the World Series. With a first round matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League divisional series, it looked like the Cardinals would be the favorite to advance. With Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, they simply had a better starting pitching rotation and their hitting looked stronger too.
