Can ‘The Dark Knight’ Overtake ‘Titanic’ As Biggest Box Office Movie?
Titanic is currently the biggest grossing film of all time at the US box office. After a fabulously long run of being in the cinema for nine months, with 15 weeks at number one, the James Cameron directed film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio made $600.8 million. Now we have The Dark Knight, the new Batman film breaking records all over the shop, including biggest midnight opening, and biggest opening weekend. But could it ever take the ultimate title? The chances are slim, as Variety points out. The problem is that the movie industry has moved on somewhat, for better or worse, since then. Movie studios now bank on gigantic openings knowing that there’ll be a steep drop-off come week 2 and beyond.
