I’m guessing that you live in a rented house? Well if the tree was dead, dying or dangerous they are well in their right due to duty of care. It could be that the Housing department got confused, and ordered for it to be felled. It the tree was dangerous and on your land the the Neighbouring land act, could give them permission to fell the tree, but would charge you for the privilege. Sometimes the Contractors get confused over house numbers and fell the wrong tree. It’s happened to me before. Phone the council and ask for the green space department. If you get me on the other end, then I apologise in advance.
