Can the banking system ever be moral?
NO IT CANNOT, in fact, moral conduct in a private enterprise market economy is virtually, if not outright literally, prohibited by law. (I don’t know about UK) but in US, the private enterprise is required by law to produce profit for its shareholders as its first priority and that means (without speaking the words) the private enterprise is required by law to underpay employees and overcharge customers to the maximum extent allowable by law, or it is guilty of ‘fraud’. No free enterprise market economy will ever produce a moral code of conduct. The essential fundament of ‘modern’ economies is formal abolition of classical moral principles… so again, in short… NO. Banking and economics are inherently ammoral.
