Can the Annas Hummingbird survive in cold spells?
The Anna’s Hummingbird is special in that it can go into a dormant state when it becomes too cold outside. In the event that we have a cold snap in the Puget Sound area, make sure to rotate your feeders, keep one hummingbird feeder in the house to keep warm and when the one outside becomes frozen, switch them. There is some controversy whether or not Anna’s Hummingbirds depend on human’s during the winter, but generally it is believed that without our help, their chance of survival during very cold weather is increased when we keep our feeders filled and unfrozen.
