Can the American Red Cross Bay Area send me abroad for international volunteer opportunities?
The American Red Cross provides assistance during international disasters upon the request of that country’s Red Cross or Red Crescent society. Each year, the Red Cross deploys a limited number of volunteers who have undergone extensive training in disaster relief. Most of these individuals have previously worked on international disaster relief initiatives and assignments last for a minimum of three weeks. These deployments are made at the request of the affected country and are coordinated with that country’s Red Cross or Red Crescent society, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and our national headquarters. The bulk of disaster response activities internationally are handled by relief professionals from the international community and from the region affected. Well-intentioned foreigners, lacking technical skills, disaster experience, and familiarity with the local culture and language, can seriously complicate relief efforts.
