Despite the lack of scientific evidence and safety data on alternative medicine, Americans spent in 1997 more than $27 billion on alternative therapies. Johns Hopkins Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in Cancer has been awarded a five-year $7.8 million grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH) to establish a research center to study complementary and alternative medicine in treatment of cancer, and thus will be able to answer such questions aforementioned above. John Hopkins Medicine will first focus on alternative therapies for breast and prostate cancers, in which will be generalized to other forms of cancer. The Center will train and educate physicians and medical students in alternative medicine.
