Can students receive a partial IGERT stipend and receive funds from their institution or department at the same time to bring them up the required $30,000 level?
The IGERT award must pay $30,000 per trainee per year, for a recommended 2 years. IGERT does not pay parts of stipends. PIs are, however, encouraged to include more graduate students in the IGERT training above those being supported by the grant, funded outside the grant in any way they wish. When other sources of funding are used to fund additional graduate students outside the IGERT grant (such as foreign students), you need not pay them $30,000. Students who get the benefit of IGERT educational and research training but are not paid by the IGERT stipend are called IGERT Associates, and most of our IGERTs have them. We encourage this because then the impact of the training grant is much greater.
