Can students install software they have purchased on their laptops?
Short answer – no. We do our best to keep students from doing so by managing system permissions to prohibit installation and operation of unauthorized applications. Long answer – Throughout the year, district technicians develop several images (sets of applications available) to be installed on student laptops. Before images are distributed, we make sure there are no conflicts between applications and that applications function reliably. The more applications added to the image, the higher the possibility for malfunction. Any changes to the image for individual students may impact the reliability of the software. In addition, it would be illegal for the district to install or allow installation of any software for which we do not hold appropriate licensing. Individual licenses purchased by consumers (families/students) would not be appropriate in our situation where we have over 1000 computers needing said licensing.
