Can students build up other parts of their CV to partially counterbalance the 2:2?
Students who are heading for a 2:2 could consider gaining a year of paralegal work experience between completing their LLB and starting the LPC. Other practical experience such as volunteering in a Citizen’s Advice Bureau or a law centre could also be useful. This will allow their CVs to compare favourably as against those of people who possess a 2:1. Although most paralegal vacancies now tend to require completion of the LPC, I have found that some LLB graduates are successful in finding paralegal work. Vacancies are advertised on certain websites, in local newspapers and many firms recruit from speculative approaches. An LLB student who wants to consider this route should contact their university’s Careers Service for further help. When applying to a firm for the training contract itself, students with a 2:2 should ensure skills and achievements are highlighted clearly in their CV and referred to in a covering letter. If they have had a paralegal position, then the experience gained
