Can “strep throat” cause extreme facial swelling?

Many viruses can cause symptoms that are identical to strep, and unless he was tested for strep and confirmed to have strep throat

I don’t know how extreme you mean, but yes it can.  My 19 month woke up the other day with his face so swollen he couldn’t open his eyes. He also had a light rash.  Took him to the peditrician, and viola, Strep.  The peditrician said strep could explain all his sysmptoms (I didn’t ask for an elaboration).

So yes, strep can cause swelling..why? I don’t know. 😀

No. There will not be swelling all over the face. But there may be Swollen, tender lymph glands (nodes) in your neck. Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection that can make your throat feel sore and scratchy. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and usually go away on their own. Only a small portion of sore throats are the result of strep throat.
