Can Steeler fans find solace in foxholes?
I take as my text today the Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 1, Verse 25: “How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!” Clearly, this is a prescient reference to the mighty Steelers, unexpectedly vanquished in the football playoffs. But those of you who think we in Pittsburgh are completely undone by this defeat should think again. True, a great pall has fallen over the city. Dazed and despondent people wander the streets. In elevators, the good Burghers can barely start the traditional conversations. They mutter, “How about them …?” but the words trail off in bitter sorrow. Fortunately, relatives of afflicted fans know to provide their loved ones liquid nourishment from local breweries until they are back on solid foods such as kielbasa. If thoughtless people tactlessly mention the Super Bowl, they are met by a defiant chorus of “What Super Bowl?” Being indomitable, Steelers fans will adjust. They will take up hobbies.
