Can Spatial Data Custodians Make A Difference?
The apology to Indigenous Australians amongst other things recognised the important place land and resources have in their cultural, spiritual, social and economic lives. As one of many data custodians who hold information about interests in land I consider that we collectively can contribute to the reconciliation process by recognising this engagement in land and resources as opportunities arise. Sharing what we are doing in this space is a first step. Highlighting what we are doing to make a difference including: • Taking a collaborative approach to building a national framework reference dataset (land tenure) which can acknowledge the primary tenure prior to colonisation as Indigenous • Delivering online user access that allows visualisation and inquiry of native title matters over any area of the nation • Providing ready and no-cost access to native title spatial datasets to allow integration within an organisations information system to maintain awareness • Progressing delivery vi
