Can someone with rosacea use tanning beds or self tanning creams?
Tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage and prematurely age the skin as well as increase the risk of developing skin cancer. The development of rosacea is thought to be partly related to long term ultraviolet ray damage. Acute ultraviolet ray exposure can also trigger rosacea flare-ups. Tanning beds are best avoided. Self tanners are topical agents that provide temporary darkening to the skin without the damaging effects of UV radiation. Skin darkening can mask the redness associated with rosacea and can be used so long as they are non-irritating.
