Can someone who drinks alcohol use Cholestin?
A. Cholestin naturally contains HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, which work within the liver to control the production of cholesterol. Cholestin contains several natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, one of which (monacolin K/lovastatin) has been associated with rare (in less than 1 to 2% of users) but serious side effects, including liver dysfunction marked by elevated liver enzymes and rhabdomyolysis (sever muscle weakness). Because of this, the manufacturers of lovastatin recommend caution in patients who consume substantial quantities of alcohol or have a past history of liver disease. Side effects were more common in these individuals because of extra strain on the liver (alcohol is also metabolised in the liver). Even though we have not seen these reported side effects in scientific studies with Cholestin, we provide the warning since this HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor is also naturally present in Cholestin. Our scientists translated this “substantial” amount of alcohol too greater th
