Can someone use my account if they have my bank account number and sort code?
The best way to deal with this is to open a new bank account somewhere else and close the account at the bank which fails to take any notice of your instructions. I do not believe you are at risk – you have to give this information out periodically (it’s printed on your cheques). There is some value in an imposter being able to produce your statement as proof of identity – although usually two forms of ID are required. Having been the victim of identitiy fraud (a t an on-line bank as it happens), I find it unsettling that this happens, but I have never been held liable for losses that have arisen. Also a bit disturbing that someone could know how much (or little) you have in the vaults.
