Can someone tell me about head coverings for Jewish women?
Orthodox married women wear headcoverings ALL the time. Many of the women I know wear hats or snoods, but many also wear ‘sheitels’, or wigs. A lot of people think that it’s odd to cover hair by wearing a wig, but it’s a matter of Jewish modesty, or tznius. Orthodox Jews believe that women’s hair should be private between her and her husband. As far as the little lace circles go, I think they’re just a hold-over from the time when all religious women covered their hair. There’s still a sense that it should at least be covered during prayer, and so some Conservative women wear the little lace things. You might check out a website called tznius.com for scarves and other headcoverings. You won’t find the little lace things there, though!
