I have been working in marketing for 15 years and have used a number of event planners for some of the events we have run. A lot of event planners start working in promotion companies because often promotions for consumer goods etc are mini events. Marketing, communications and PR courses may all help. You need to be incredibly organised, know how to work under extreme pressure and an amazing multi-tasker. You can start small and be responsible for events that are run at your college or university. Think if you are having a charity auction for your student government/unition. Someone needs to organise that: – venue – advertising – food/entertainment – timeplan etc. Also, always plan for the worse thing you can imagine happening than you will be prepared. For example, i was working for an internet company and we were doing these courses in front of 500 people. We obviously needed the internet.
