Can someone sign their IRS refund check over to me?

If you are planning on depositing her IRS check into your personal bank account, she needs to be present at the bank when you cash it. My parents divorced, but filed a joint tax return. The refund check was issued in both their names. Amongst themselves, they agreed that the federal refund belonged solely to my dad, and the state refund solely to my mom. Both of them signed the check, but the bank refused to deposit the check in unless it was to a joint account in both their names (which they no longer had). Both of them needed to be present at the bank to cash the check. It was particularly frustrating at the time since my dad had hip problems and avoided walking unless absolutely necessary. The bank wouldn’t accept a written or verbal authorization, though they did indicate a court order was acceptable. Stupid bank. Your particular bank may not care, or check. But I recommend that your friend comes with you to the bank, or she cash it herself and give you the cash.
