My view is a bit different from the other posts. How about a P-14 Enfield or its Americanized brother, the 1917 Enfield? The Pattern 14 was planned to be the successor to Great Britain’s Lee-Enfield, but World War II got in the way, so the Lee-Enfield was retained. Because Remington and Winchester had tooled up to produce the P-14 only to see the contracts canceled, the British design was modified to use the standard U.S. cartridge. Production of the 1917 Enfield ran into millions. The rifle served well in World War I and into World War II. It’s very strong, reliable, accurate and lots of fun to shoot.
