Generally speaking, for the purpose of testing you will create two hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that nothing will (or has) happen(ed), the second is that something will (or has). So for an example of this, let’s say that we want to see if men over 25 wear hats more than men under 25. Our null hypothesis (the term used for a hypothesis where nothing will happen) is that men over 25 wear hats as much as men under 25. Our alternative (or research hypothesis) is then: Men over 25 wear more hats than men under 25. We would then collect our data and do a t test (actual hypothesis testing). This t test would compare the means of the two groups as to how many hats were worn. We could then conclude from the value given to us by our t test (our obtained value) whether there is a statistically significant difference between the two and more importantly if our research hypothesis is more acceptable than our null hypothesis. This is accomplished by comparing the obtained value with a critica
