Ziggurats were Mesopotamian. However, they did proviide Egyptian engineers a model for constructing a solid structural foundation for the pyramids. Look up the “Bent Pyramid” and the “Step pyramid” as examples of prototype pyramids. Both of them ar architectural and engineering failures, but the lessons learned by the engineers helped formulate plans for making a pyramid proper. The idea of a pyramid grew out of the trapezoidal burial chamber called a mastaba. The entrance was a vertical shaft accessed from the roof, and the remains were inserted into a small chamber under the mastaba proper. meanwhile a small room was created with a statue of the deceased that typically faced east to catch the morning sun. This was the access door for the Ka, aka an Egyptian soul, so if the soul got bored in the mastaba it could come back to earth and boogie.
