Older types of TRV’s needed to be fitted so that the water flow came in the bottom connection and out of the side connection. If fitted the wrong way around the valve will hammer and knock as it closes because the water flow is forcing the valve seat back open. Your best solution is a new TRV, modern TRV’s are able to be fitted in either direction of flow. The valve will be labelled as 2-way on the box and usually have arrows on the valve to indicate this.
