Although it’s not very large, just 1,205 meters tall, and not very active, it’s famous for a large eruption in 1982, that killed 2000 people and affected the Earth’s climate for several years. El Chichon is a small, powerful trachyandesitic tuff cone and lava dome complex that’s believed to have formed about 220,000 years ago. Before its eruption in 1982, it was indistinguishable from other nearby nonvolcanic peaks. And geologists weren’t concerned about it at all. It began erupting on March 29, 1982, and by April 4th it was done. Over these few days it released large quantities of sulfur dioxide aerolos into the atmosphere.
