1) Chechnya never was a republic of the Soviet Union. It was an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation (Russian Soviet Socialist Federation consisted of various republics and regions); 2) Ukraine WAS a republic of the Soviet Union and it is an independent state now. There were no any explosions with Chechens to to be blamed for in Ukraine. Moreover, some Ukrainian citizens took part in the wars on the side of Chechens as mercenaries; 3) Yeltsin (I hope you know who he was) was persuaded that if he would let Chechnya go it would start a chain reaction among other Russian republics and regions. There were claims for independence not only among regions with non-Russian population but with Russian majority as well.
