The Germans on one side fought a combined army made up of Bristish, French, Italian and Indian troops. Both sides had dug themselves into trenches stretching over 100 miles across France and Belgium. The Somme is a region in france were some of the worst fighting of WW1 occurred. Many 1000’s of soldiers were told to go out of their trenches and walk toward the German army trenches. In the area between the trenches (called no mans land) they were gunned down by large machine guns. Although tens of thousands had been killed, the Bristish Generals in charge still sent more men and boys forward to their certain death. In all the allied forces made less than a mile of ground.
