Many times collectors are simply junk debt buyers who troll around looking for people who they believe may pay even if the SOL has run out. They will threaten lawsuits to try to bluff you into paying. If the SOL has run, asking for validation (not verification) including proof that the SOL has not expired often gets them to go away.
