Can somebody give me a simple explanation of the Socratic method?

There are two ways “Socratic Method” is used: 1. To reason with somebody by asking questions which lead the answerer to the conclusion you want, instead of presenting an argument directly. 2. To use “dialectic” to reach truth. Which (for the Greeks) meant reasoning something out through a logical argument dialogue. Proposing a theory (such as Piety is doing what the Gods love) then seeing if it holds up to different cases and examples. In the Platonic dialogues Socrates uses these together to search for the definition of “Good” and other such concepts and virtues. Nietzsche also used the expression in a slightly difference sense, referring to Socrates rational rejection of the world.
