Can somebody explain the ending to the “The Devils Advocate” to me ?
The movie shows two diverging paths, based on the choice of whether or not to continue to represent his client he knows to be guilty of child molestation. Most of the movie explores the path of the choice be dishonest, of an advocate who justifies it by just doing his job. Al Pacino is the devil, but most of it is metaphorical. It shows how Reeves gets sucked in. One single act of unethical behavior just seems to make the rest so much easier. In the very end, the movie shows that he did not choose that path after all. Most of the movie was a “dream”, a vision of what the path of dishonesty would have offered. Instead he chooses to be honest, and by refusing to continue to represent his client, he knows that justice will prevail. For him it seems to pay off right away. The final quirk, however, is the media attention he receives for his choice, an advocate with conscience. This causes the advocate to bath in the attention, and perhaps think too much of himself. The devil did not succeed
