CAN SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THE APPEAL OF BANDS LIKE CANNIBAL CORPSE?
First of all, it’s Death Metal, not Black Metal. There’s a big difference. Cannibal Corpse is one of those metal bands that sells records via shock value. Personally, I’m not impressed by gore for gore’s sake but there are guys that think it’s “totally br00tal”. But yes, their lyrics are stupid and childish. I agree with you there. Not all Death Metal bands have lyrics like that though. There are many metal bands that actually have something to say, or at least don’t rely on gore lyrics to sell records. You mentioned that the stage show is “like a cartoon.” Well, yeah. Heavy Metal has traditionally expressed elements of escapism. It’s supposed to be weird and dark and extreme and so forth…it’s part of the appeal. “The music isn’t memorable”: well maybe not to you.
