Smart meters make more information about their energy use available to consumers. If they choose to use that information to lower their energy consumption, they could save money. Studies indicate that raising consumer awareness of energy use does lead to lower consumption, which should not only save money for consumers who reduce their usage, but also could lower the cost of electricity for all consumers.
