Can Six Sigma be used outside the quality arena?
Six Sigma is first and foremost about improving organisational performance, which includes quality management. It is about listening to the voice of the customer and creating processes that will deliver excellent products and services. Of course, in these highly competitive times, organisations have to address safety, environmental and other issues, as well as quality issues. There is no reason why Six Sigma projects should not be applied to eliminate material waste or to reduce energy consumption. Both types of project would achieve financial savings and also improve the environment. Similarly, a project could address the opportunity to greatly reduce the risk of accidents. The gains achieved would make the workplace healthier and safer, as well as reducing financial losses due to claims, delayed work and damage to corporate image.
