Can SGs take financial donations directly?
Summary: I have a fundraising legal question. The situation is this: Our SG recieves and manages student fees from the College each semester. The money is all held by the College, but in a specific account within the College. We manage the funds of all student organizations, many of whom do fundraising of some sort. One in particular raises between $2-5k each semester, including some donations of a few hundred dollars each. Sometimes these go through the College’s Advancement office, (which is not separate from the College legally), sometimes the donations will come through us. As this really applies to all student groups fundraising, I’ve become concerned about some flack I’m getting from the College telling me that they will not provide receipts for donations restricted to SG/student organizations, because such entities “do not really exist” as far as the College is concerned.
